Cleaning with a mixture of white vinegar and water can get windows sparkling without any of the chemicals in store-bought cleaners, says Tonya Harris, founder of Slightly Greener.
Vinegar is produced by the alcoholic fermentation of grains, which produces acetic acid. The acidic nature of vinegar makes it a powerful cleaning solution. “Vinegar, in a one-to-one mix with distilled water, works as a great dehydrator and is great for breaking down dirt and grime,” says Harris.
Distilled water is important so it doesn’t leave mineral particles on your windows that can cause streaks, says Harris. A combination of vinegar and water can be used to clean both interior and exterior windows.
Make Your Own Homemade Glass Cleaner
Quick tip: Store-bought cleaners often leave a film on the glass, says Harris. When you first start cleaning with vinegar and water, you may need to wipe the windows several times to remove the film and prevent streaks. After that initial cleaning, you’ll have streak-free windows with just one pass using vinegar and water, Harris says.

Quick tip: Avoid adding too much vinegar, as the added acidity can damage some materials. If you need more cleaning power, add a drop of dish soap to your solution.

Vinegar and water can be used to clean interior or exterior windows. Because exterior windows tend to get dirty, you may need to do more than one, Harris says. No matter which window you wash, the process is the same.
The best time to clean windows is spring and fall, when temperatures are between 60 and 74 degrees Fahrenheit. Washing windows when it is very hot or cold or when the glass is in direct sunlight can cause streaks.
Important: Vinegar is safe to use on windows and mirrors, but can damage other materials due to its acidity. Never use a vinegar cleaning solution on electronics (including their glass screens). Do not use vinegar on granite or marble countertops or stone slabs; Choose mild castile soap instead.
